La parte glucidica del transportador supone un 33% de su peso molecular aparente, y esta formada por cadenas complejas sin acidos sialicos, cuya ausencia provoca la disminucion de la actividad de transporte.  para su correcto funcionamiento, esta proteina requiere la participacion de residuos cisteina localizados en un entorno relativamente hidrofilico, pero no en el sitio de union a glicina, sodio o cloruro. El transportador se fosforila in vitro por pkc y pka en residuos serina. Su actividad en cultivos primarios de astrocitos se ve incrementada mediante tratamiento con activadores de ambas quinasas. La transcripcion del gen que codifica para el transportador de glicina esta regulada diferencialmente en distintas regiones del sistema nervioso central de rata durante el
