Durante la metamorfosis los precursores nerviosos se dividen para dar lugar a las diferentes celulas que forman los organos sensoriales. El gen asense se expresa a lo largo del desarrollo en los precursores nerviosos y en las celulas descendientes de la primera division. La falta del gen asense ocasiona la ausencia de precursores nerviosos y fallos en la diferenciacion de parte de los que se singularizan. En el adulto, las moslas deficientes para asense presentan organos sensoriales malformados.  mediante lineas transgenicas se ha delimitado la funcion asense y se ha ensayado su capacidad para promover el desarrollo de los organos sensoriales del adulto.
