Aunque el transporte de gaba se ha estudiado con profundidad, muchos aspectos sobre su funcionalidad y regulacion no son conocidos.  utilizando como sistemas de estudio cultivos primarios de neuronas y astrocitos, asi como una fraccion purificada del transportador, obtenida por tecnicas de precipitacion y cromatograficas a partir de vesiculas de membrana plasmatica, hemos demostrado:  1- existe una regulacion a corto plazo por proteina quinasa c (pk-c) del transporte de gaba en astrocitos, asi como una regulacion a largo plazo por ampc del transportador en neuronas. En ambos casos se observo una disminucion en los niveles del transporte.  2- el transportador de gaba purificado se fosforila in vitro en presencia de pk-c.  3- la expresion del arnm del transportador
