En la rata, la ca es la principal comisura que comunica contralateralmente areas relacionadas con el sistema olfativo. El estudio de su desarrollo en animales c y h nos puede dar pistas no solo de como evolucionan las conexiones interhemisfericas, sino tambien de como las hormonas tiroideas modulan este proceso. En las ratas c el n.  total de axones comisurales (ac) de la ca aumenta rapidamente desde el dia embrionario 18 hasta 1 millon de axones en el dia postnatal 4 (p4) y su n. Se mantiene constante despues, al contrario de lo que ocurre en otras comisuras de otros mamiferos con una perdida de ac postnatal importante. El hipotiroidismo no afecta al numero total de ac, aunque si estan significativamente reducidos tanto el n. De ac mielinicos como el de celulas gfbp+ y gfap-, y a partir de p8 el diametro medio ponderado de los ac (mielinicos y amielinicos) en las ratas h es menor que en las
