Las caracteristicas de secuencia lo colocan en una situacion intermedia dentro de la evolucion de esta familia de genes reguladores en los artropodos. Este es el unico representante de la familia engrailed en artemia. Con objeto de estudiar la distribucion espacial de los productos de este gen se han puesto a punto protocolos para la tincion de animales enteros, tanto con sondas de dna marcadas no radioactivamente como con anticuerpos, y se ha producido un anticuerpo policlonal que reconoce especificamente la proteina engrailed de artemia. Existe un patron de expresion en bandas repetidas segmentalmente que marcan la parte posterior de cada segmento. El modo en que se genera este patron revela las diferencias existentes en el proceso de segmentacion de insectos de banda germinal larga (como drosophila) y crustaceos. El patron de expresion en los apendices apoya la teoria monofiletica del origen de los artropodos, y la falta de expresion en el sistema nervioso en desarrollo permite especular sobre la funcion
