El control de la estereoselectividad corresponde exclusivamente al atomo de azufre sulfinilico incluso en los casos donde existen centros quirales mas proximos al centro de reaccion.  el mecanismo propuesto permite justificar el curso estereo-quimico de la hidrocianacion.  la hidrolisis del grupo ciano a carboxamida de las sulfinilcianhidrinas obtenidas transcurre con reduccion simultanea de la funcion de azufre. La asistencia anquimerica del oxigeno sulfinilico en la hidrolisis del nitrilo constituye la clave de la suavidad de las condiciones requeridas. La elucidacion del mecanismo de estas reacciones ha permitido desarrollar un nuevo metodo general de reduccion de sulfoxidos a sulfuros.  se ha aplicado la metodolog\u00eda desarrollada a la sintesis enantioselectiva de derivados de acidos glicidicos alfa-alquilsustituidos.
