Este nuevo tipo de ecuacion, llamada ecuacion de invariancia ponderada (en ingles measured equation of invariance), no se obtiene directamente de las ecuaciones diferenciales de maxwell, sino que se deriva numericamente de un conjunto de soluciones conocidas. Debido a que la eip (mei) no se deriva de condiciones fisicas, se puede usar para acabar el dominio computacional en cualquier punto, incluso sobre la superficie del objeto. Al terminar el dominio computacional tan cerca del objeto de interes, la localidad de los metodos basados en ecuaciones diferenciales y la reduccion en el numero de incognitas de los metodos basados en ecuaciones integrales se combinan en un solo metodo. Esto es especialmente util en problemas, el metodo de condiciones de contorno abiertas.  para este tipo de problemas, el metodo de la eip utiliza un numero de incognitas del mismo orden de magnitud que el metodo de los momentos, pero con un tiempo de calculo de orden o (n2) en vez de o (n3).
