Las preparaciones de virus han permitido identificar diferencias en la movilidad electroforetica de la cp y en las propiedades serologicas de varios aislados. Este procedimiento de purificacion ha sido tambien empleado en la inmunizacion de ratones, para la produccion de varios anticuerpos monoclonales especificos de ppv que permiten detectar y diferenciar los aislados de ppv. Segun sus propiedades de reconocimiento y su comportamiento en ensayos de competicion, los anticuerpos monoclonales tambien sirvieron para definir al menos siete lugares antigenicos en la cp de ppv, que pueden ser agrupados en tres regiones mediante inmunoelectrotransferencia con virus parcialmente digerido con tripsina. Mientras que varios aislados de ppv eran transmitidos por afidos, desde huespedes herbaceos a le\u00f1osos y en sentido contrario, uno de ellos se comporto como no transmisible en experimentos de planta a planta. Este aislado puede distinguirse del resto por sus propiedades serologicas, asi como por presentar una cp de menor tama\u00f1o, lo que se corresponde con una posible deleccion en el gen correspondiente analizado por pcr. Sin embargo, su cp resulto funcional en la transmision por afidos del aislado purificado en ensayos de alimentacion a traves de membranas artificiales, cuando se le suplementa con la proteina factor de transmision (hc) obtenida de plantas infectadas con el virus y de la patata (pvy).
