Ello ha permitido obtener no solo los mismos resultados que la termodinamica predice para los extremos de estas magnitudes fisicas, sino que estableciendo la condicion de extremo a unas funciones especiales denominadas funcionales se obtienen las relaciones formales de la termodinamica clasica como la ecuacion de un gas perfecto, las ecuaciones de estado de gases reales, y las que rigen los procesos politropicos y sus casos particulares.  por otra parte, se ha aplicado el mismo metodo matematico para la obtencion de la ley de curie, cuando el sistema termodinamico que se estudia es un solido paramagnetico. Asi mismo, cuando el sistema es la radiacion del cuerpo negro la aplicacion del calculo de variaciones ha permitido obtener la ley de stefan-boltzman asi como la presion, energia interna y antropia asociadas.  por ultimo, se aplica esta teoria a la obtencion de la ley de distribucion de concentraciones en funcion de la distancia en los fenomenos de difusion
