Esta tecnica es idonea para medir parametros que esten relacionados con peque\u00f1os desplazamientos originados en el plano del solido. En nuestro caso nos interesan, tan solo, los incrementos de longitud que se deben a la deformacion (termica o elastica). Sin embargo, dado que en la realizacion experimental o es posible afirmar, a priori, que el material va a tener un punto fijo y que no va a girar, incluimos en las ecuaciones, ademas del termino que da cuenta de dicha deformacion, la posibilidad de traslacion y rotacion, pudiendo conocer al final del ensayo que cantidad de cada una de ellas interviene en el desplazamiento total
