Las elevadas actividades celulasa, agarasa, carragenasa y alginato liasa cuantificadas demuestran la capacidad de estos ficofagos para digerir los polisacaridos estructurales de las macroalgas y, junto con sus caracteristicas optimas de ph y temperatura justifican su aplicacion potencial para el aislamiento de protoplastos. Las actividades enzimaticas fueron alteradas en funcion de la dieta. Los rendimientos en el numero de protoplastos de ulva rigida y solieria filiformis con los extractos digestivos demostraron la existencia de una relacion entre las actividades in vitro y su efectividad real sobre la digestion de la pared celular. Diferentes parametros como la tasa de crecimiento, el ph del medio de cultivo y los pre-tratamientos aumentaron el rendimiento y la viabilidad de los protoplastos
