En el caso de elementos rigidos, un elemento se define mediante las coordenadas cartesianas de algunos de sus puntos y las componentes cartesianas de algunos vectores unitarios, cuya funcion es indicar las direcciones de los ejes de los pares que unen el elemento con los vecinos.  en el caso de elementos flexibles se precisan mas variables para definir el elemento: de una parte, se introducen dos vectores unitarios adicionales, rigidamente unidos a uno cualquiera de los vectores unitarios ya existentes, formando un triedro ortogonal rigido que sera la base local del elemento; de otra, se consideran las amplitudes de los modos de deformacion estaticos y dinamicos correspondientes a la sintesis de componentes con fronteras fijas. Las amplitudes de los modos estaticos no constituiran nuevas variables del problema, pues se expresaran en funcion de las coordenadas naturales, mientras que las amplitudes de los modos dinamicos si
