Los resultados obtenidos en ensayos de sensibilidad a antibioticos y agentes hidrofobicos y en los de interaccion con la sonda fluorescente hidrofobica n-fenil-naftilamina (npn), demuestran que la membrana externa de brucella sp., A diferencia de la los gram-negativos mas estudiados, posee una elevada permeabilidad a substancias hidrofobicas. El significado biologico de este hecho en relacion al peculiar \u00abhabitat\u00bb de brucella se discute en el trabajo.  ademas las celulas de brucella, a diferencia de las de bacterias no patogenas intracelulares estudiadas: (1), resistieron la accion de polictiones bactericidas como polimixina b, tris, melitinina, cecropina c, magaininas i y ii y un extracto acido de lisosomas de leucocitos polimorfonucleares de conejo; (2), tras tratarlas con polimixina b no sufrieron alteraciones en su membrana externa detectables por microscopia electronica de transmision, ni alteraciones en su permeabilidad que se reflejan en la liberacion de material al medio extracelular, o en la entrada de la npn o de la lisozima en ellas; (3), adsorbieron una cantidad muy reducida de polimixina b. Nuestros datos apuntan al lipopolisacarido (lps) de brucella como el principal responsable de la falta de interaccion de la membrana externa de brucella con los agentes policationicos.
