Los genes para la degradacion de estos hidrocarburos estan estructurados en dos operones:  el operon upper codifica las enzimas para el metabolismo de tolueno y xilenos hasta benzoato y toluatos, y, el meta, las enzimas que convierten los benzoatos y toluatos en intermediarios del ciclo de krebs. Hay dos genes reguladores: xylr, que codifica la proteina xylr que activa la ruta upper, y xyls que codifica la proteina xyls que estimula la transcripcion desde el promotor del operon meta, pm. Este trabajo se ha centrado en el estudio de xyls, el regulador positivo del metabolismo del benzoato.  para estudiar como funciona este activador, se ha realizado una aproximacion genetica que comprende: i) estudios sobre la interaccion entre xyls y sus efectores, ii) estudios para definir geneticamente los diferentes dominios de la proteina y sus interacciones, iii) el analisis de la estructura primaria del regulador.  i) mediante el aislamiento y la caracterizacion de los mutantes de xyls con el perfil de efectores alterado se han localizado las regiones supuestamente implicadas en la union al efector.
