A pesar de importacia de este proceso, apenas se ha investigado en esa area y existe muy poca informacion acerca de los mecanismos moleculares implicados. En este sentido, proteinas asociadas a la cromatina, especificas del embrion y que desaparecen durante la germinacion, como es el caso de p16, podrian tener un papel en la proteccion de la estructura de la cromatina, preservandola de la perdida dramatica de agua. Por tanto, resultaba interesante el estudio en detalle de las caracteristicas de esta proteina y su posible funcion asociada a la cromatina. Para ello se ha aislado el cdna que codifica p16. el gen se ha denominado psp54 y codifica n polip\u00e9ptido mas largo de manera que p16 esta codificada por el tercio c-terminal del cdna de psp54. Tanto p16 como su proteina precursora muestran similitud de secuencia con proteinas de reserva aunque a nivel fisiologico presenta marcadas diferencias, ya que su mrna se almacena en la semilla seca y es capaz de inducirse en respuesta a estr\u00e9s hidrico y tratamiento con aba durante la germinacion. La proteina p16 se ha inmunoculizado en nucleos y se ha demostrado su interaccion con las histonas y el dna in vitro.
