Maite Sanmartin Arti\u00f1ano <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>El acido asc\u00f3rbico (aa) es un compuesto quimico bien conocido por su valor nutritivo. En los tejidos vegetales el aa esta presente en concentraciones milimolares y juega un papel crucial como antioxidante,especialmente contra el estr\u00e9s oxidativo. Tambien actua como cofactor de ciertos enzimas y participa en el control de la division y la expansion celular. A pesar de su importancia existe poca informacion referente a la regulacion de este metabolismo y los factores que controlan su concentracion en las celulas vegetales. Uno de los enzimas responsables de la oxidacion del aa es la ascorbato oxidasa (ao). Este enzima cataliza la oxidacion del aa a dehidroascorbato con la reduccion concomitante del oxigeno molecular a agua. La ao es un enzima vegetal unico, miembro de la familia de la oxidasa del cobre, del que no se conoce claramente su funcion en el metabolismo vegetal. Dado su localizacion apoplastica, se ha sugerido que la ao podria participar en la expansi\u00f3n de la pared celular. Ademas, este enzima se ha relacionado con la division celular y el desarrollo de los frutos. En melon, la ao est\u00e1 codificada por una familia genica compuesta por al menos cuatro genes.  en este trabajo, se describe el clonaje y caracterizaci\u00f3n de dos cdnas, ao1 y ao4, que codifican para la ao en melon. Las secuencias de ao1 y ao4 muestran una gran similitud entre ellas y con otras ao y oxidasas de cobre anteriormente descritas. Mediante estudios de expresion genica, se ha demostrado que solo los genes ao1 y ao4 son transcripcionalmente activo y estan regulados de forma diferencial en distintos tejidos, a lo largo del desarrollo y en respuesta a distintas condiciones. Los transcritos del gen ao1 se encuentran en las flores y frutos mientras que el gen ao4 se expresa preferentemente en los tejidos vegetativos.
