Los intercambios de nutrientes y oxigeno entre el sedimento y el agua se han determinado mediante incubaciones de sedimento con campanas \u00abin situ\u00bb, por un lado, y a partir de calculos de flujo por difusion molecular a favor de gradiente de concentracion, por el otro. La comparacion de ambas estimas revela la actuacion de mecanismos de aceleracion de estos intercambios en los sedimentos mas arenosos, y de mecanismos de freno en los mas fangosos. El sedimento de la cubeta central de la bahia (zona de relativa estabilidad) ejerce un papel de regulacion de la liberacion del amonio al agua, reteniendo parte de la produccion de amonio (por descomposicion de la materia organica) de los meses de mayor actividad (septiembre-octubre) en el agua intersticial. La distribucion espacial de los flujos en la bahia se relaciona con la distribucion de sedimentos, mientras que el consumo de oxigeno esta mas influido por la sedimentacion reciente. La magnitud de la sedimentacion y su ritmo determina la pauta estacional de los flujos, considerados, a la luz de estos estudios, como un factor clave para la produccion
