Mediante cruzamientos controlados se ha comprobado que este polimorfismo se debe a un locus autosomico, con tres alelos, dominancia en jerarquia y expresion restringida al sexo femenino. Los resultados de experimentos realizados en el laboratorio y en poblaciones naturales indican que la longevidad de los tres fenotipos es similar. Las hembras androcromotipicas no son reconocidas como tales por los machos. Teniendo en cuenta que una sola copula es suficiente para fertilizar la totalidad de los huevos, se propone que estas hembras evitan activamente copulas innecesarias y de larga duracion (incluso mas de 5 horas). Este hecho unido a la existencia de cambios en la densidad de la poblacion y al sistema genetico, contribuyen al mantenimiento del polimorfismo femenino de esta especie. Medido el exito copulativo en machos y hembras en el campo se ha comprobado que la oportunidad para la seleccion sexual es mayor en los machos que en las hembras, tal como la teoria de la seleccion
