La etapa que limitaba la velocidad de la reaccion era el ataque de los agentes nitrosantes en unos casos, el reordenamiento interno del grupo no en otros y la transferencia protonica al medio, al igual que ocurre en agua, cuando el disolvente no acuoso era el dmso. Se estudio tambien la reaccion de c-nitrosacion del acido de meldrum en medio acuoso, encontrandose que la reaccion ocurria a traves del intermedio carbanion a baja acidez, mientras que a acidez elevada la reaccion transcurria a traves de la forma enol del acido de meldrum.
