El analisis detallado del tema, la estructura, el punto de vista y los personajes en cada una de las novelas y relatos correspondientes a las diferentes etapas, conduce a la progresiva comprension del proceso narrativo.  el realismo de los primeros relatos se encamina hacia el costumbrismo simbolico, donde el marco verosimil introducido por el narrador omnisciente refleja la concepcion idealizada de la existencia mantenida por un heroe eminentemente despersonalizado.  paulatinamente el cuadro costumbrista se reviste de matices oniricos y extraordinarios para subrayar la gran perplejidad del ser humano, su gran vacio interior.
