Se divide en tres grandes apartados. En principio trata aspectos generales y externos a la propia obra, para luego centrarse en cuestiones internas, tematicas y formales.  en los capitulos iniciales presenta el estado en el que se halla el cuento en estos a\u00f1os y profundiza en la diversidad de terminos con los que se nombra, en la dificultad de una apropiada definicion y en la imprecision de sus limites. Luego plantea todas aquellas circunstancias que ayudan a ubicar mejor a este amplio conjunto de obras, tanto por lo que respecta a las condiciones de publicacion, como lo concerniente a los autores.  en el tercer apartado analiza la obra en si y perfila el tipo de cuento predominante. En cuanto a los aspectos y recursos narrativos, que abiertamente conectan con la tradicion realista de nuestra literatura, primero revela las tendencias tematicas mas relevantes, desde la guerra -tema inevitable-, hasta el amor -tema mas utilizado- y el humor.
