En base a la reaccion que cataliza, se ha propuesto el nombre dopacromo tautomerasa, y el numero de clasificacion e.C. 5.3.2.3.  adicionalmente, se han realizado estudios de localizacion subcelular, caracteristicas del producto de reaccion, optimizacion de metodos de medida de la actividad enzimatica, requerimientos del centro activo, sensibilidad a diferentes agentes y determinacion de su naturaleza glicoproteica, en base a la existencia de dicha enzima, se propone una nueva ruta en la eumelanogenesis. A partir de dopacromo, se produce una bifurcacion para producir acido 5,6-dihidroxiindol-2-carboxilico, en lugar de la descarbixilacion espontanea para producir 5,6-dihidroxiindol. Esta bifurcacion tiene importantes implicaciones tanto para el control de la velocidad de formacion del polimero melanico como para su composicion, estructura y
