El capitalismo tardio ya no es el capitalismo que tuvo ante sus ojos karl marx. Ahora se trata de una nueva forma de dominacion mas sutil, pero no por ello menos implacable, que se ejerce sobre el hombre y la naturaleza, configurando todos los ambitos de la existencia individual y social. Pero en el centro de esta critica (que desenmascara la implicacion de la ciencia y de la tecnica del sistema productivo, y, por ello al servicio del statu-quo, lejos, asi, de toda pretension critico-emancipadora, traicionando o truncando, de este modo, el viejo sue\u00f1o de la aufklarung de una humanidad y una naturaleza reconciliadas) hay que situar un concepto clave, el de autoconservacion (selbsterhaltung). Esto significa que su ataque a la ciencia y a la tecnica, su critica a la instrumentalizacion de la razon, y, en definitiva, al capitalismo tardio, gira en torno a este termino.
