As\u00ed, se demostr\u00f3 la presencia de receptores espec\u00edficos de alta afinidad para melatonina en los \u00f3rganos linfoides primarios y secundarios del sistema inmune de rata, como el bazo y el timo y, se estudio su efecto biol\u00f3gico en la regulaci\u00f3n de la producci\u00f3n de segundos mensajeros.  la uni\u00f3n de melatonina a los esplenocitos, las membranas crudas de bazo y los n\u00facleos purificados de bazo y timo cumple todos los criterios de uni\u00f3n de un ligando a su receptor, es un proceso que muestra propiedades tales como dependencia de tiempo, temperatura y concentraci\u00f3n celular o de prote\u00ednas, adem\u00e1s de reversibilidad, saturabilidad, alta afinidad y especificidad, y sigue los principios de la ley de acci\u00f3n de masas por una reacci\u00f3n de pseudo-primer orden.  la interacci\u00f3n no cooperativa radioligando-receptor supone una sola especie de receptor v\u00eda una reacci\u00f3n bimolecular simple y reversible. As\u00ed los esplenocitos, los n\u00facleos de timocitos y esplenocitos de rata presentan un solo sitio de uni\u00f3n de lata afinidad para melatonina con una constante de disociaci\u00f3n kd de 0,34 nm, 102 y 68 pm,. Respectivamente similar a las concentraciones circulantes de melatonina, lo que sugiere su papel fisiol\u00f3gico en la regulaci\u00f3n del sistema inmune.  el receptor de melatonina en los esplenocitos est\u00e1 acoplado funcionalmente al sistema adenilil ciclasa por medio de prote\u00ednas gi. Adem\u00e1s la melatonina, a dosis farmacol\u00f3gicas, inhibe la producci\u00f3n de amp c\u00edclico estimulado por forskolina, un potente activador de la adenilill ciclasa.  la uni\u00f3n de
