Se puede definir el hfec de una imagen como una aproximaci\u00f3n a la funci\u00f3n de densidad de un suceso o evento aleatorio denominado \u00abelemento conexo\u00bb. Este suceso no s\u00f3lo representa la distribuci\u00f3n de los niveles de gris de la textura, sino tambi\u00e9n la dependencia espacial que existe entre ellos.  el trabajo se compone principalmente de tres partes. La primera parte del trabajo se centra en la descripci\u00f3n de esta novedosa herramienta.  en una segunda parte se presenta una arquitectura para el dise\u00f1o de sistemas de reconocimiento autom\u00e1tico de formas basados en la representaci\u00f3n de un hfec. Dicha arquitectura se divide en tres fases:  1,- extracci\u00f3n de caracter\u00edsticas.  2,- selecci\u00f3n de caracter\u00edticas.  3,- clasificaci\u00f3n.  por \u00faltimo, se presenta la aplicaci\u00f3n de esta arquitectura y el hfec a un sistema real de inspecci\u00f3n autom\u00e1tica de madera.  la inspecci\u00f3n de estos objetos se realiza bajo condiciones de un entorno industrial
