Sin embargo, no todo el consumo de ox\u00edgeno est\u00e1 acoplado a la s\u00edntesis de atp. Parte de la energ\u00eda conservada en forma de gradiente electroqu\u00edmico se pierde en forma de calor debido a que existen otras v\u00edas por las que puede disiparse el gradiente de protones. Esta \u00abfuga alternativa\u00bb de protones podr\u00eda constituir un componente de gran importancia en la termog\u00e9nesis, y por tanto en el metabolismo basal. la prote\u00edna desacoplante (ucp1) expresada principalmente en tejido adiposo pardo, desacopla la cadena respiratoria mitocondrial y es la principal responsable de la termog\u00e9nesis en este tejido. Existen otras prote\u00ednas que presentan una alta homolog\u00eda con dicha prote\u00edna, como la ucp2, expresada en muchos tejidos. En el presente trabajo se intent\u00f3 lograr la expresi\u00f3n ect\u00f3pica de estas prote\u00ednas en m\u00fasculo esquel\u00e9tico mediante la inyecci\u00f3n intramuscular de dna \u00abdesnudo\u00bb, m\u00e9todo eficaz para la transferencia g\u00e9nica con una baja respuesta inmunitaria.  el estudio se realiz\u00f3 con ratas a las que se les inyect\u00f3 en el m\u00fasculo tibialis un pl\u00e1smido con el cdna de las prote\u00ednas desacoplantes (ucp1 o ucp2). Al cabo de diez d\u00edas, se realizaron diferentes determinaciones en mitocondrias aisladas para evaluar as\u00ed la eficacia de transferencia g\u00e9nica. en primer lugar, se verific\u00f3 que los m\u00fasculos inyectados expresaban la prote\u00edna correspondiente, ucp1 o ucp2. Por otra parte, se pudo comprobar una disminuci\u00f3n del potencial de membrana mitocondrial en ambos casos, y un aumento del consumo de ox\u00edgeno en las mitocondrias que expresaban ucp1.  el presente estudio pone de manifiesto que la expresi\u00f3n ectopica de prote\u00ednas desacoplantes en el m\u00fasculo esquel\u00e9tico, aumenta el flujo de protones a trav\u00e9s de la membrana
