La sobrexpresi\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna pab1 en s.Pombe provoca una defecto en el ciclo celular a 25\u00c2\u00bac, mientras que a 35\u00c2\u00bac estas c\u00e9lulas mueren. El fenotipo de muerte celular causado por la sobrexpresi\u00f3n de pab1 a 35\u00c2\u00bac, es id\u00e9ntico al causado por el gen proapopt\u00f3tico bak de mam\u00edfero en s.Pombe, definido como apoptosis en esta levadura. Por lo tanto se puede concluir que el exceso de pab1 causa apoptosis en las condiciones descritas anteriormente. durante este proceso de apoptosis, la levadura degrada su dna cromos\u00f3mico y paralelamente aumenta el contenido de dna mitocondrial. Este aumento en el dna mitocondrial no est\u00e1 acompa\u00f1ado de un incremento en el n\u00famero de mitocondrias.  adem\u00e1s de la alta temperatura, tanto el etanol como la formamida inducen apoptosis en las c\u00e9lulas que sobrexpresan pab1, por lo que este fen\u00f3meno se asocia a la respuesta general a estr\u00e9s de la levadura.  por otro lado, el hecho de que una misma modificaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica pueda interferir en el ciclo celular e inducir apoptosis sugiere que ambos procesos comparten mecanismos comunes. La prote\u00edna cdc2 es esencial para el proceso de apoptosis dependiente de pab1 al igual que la chaperona hsp91, posiblemente por su papel en el control de cdc2. La sobrexpresi\u00f3n de pab1 de humano en s.Pombe cuasa el mismo efecto apopt\u00f3tico que la prote\u00edna end\u00f3gena, indicando que este gen podr\u00eda ejercer este mismo efecto en sus propias
