Forster y henry james (\u00abhowards end\u00bb, \u00abthe europeans\u00bb y \u00abthe golden bwol\u00bb), como hipot\u00e9ticos modelos de resimbolizaci\u00f3n.  en el conjunto de la narrativa de jhabvala se aprecian marcas autoriales tem\u00e1ticas y estil\u00edsticas que se repiten en sus doce nvoelas, sus cuatro vol\u00famenes de relatos cortos y en sus guiones originales. Adem\u00e1s, estos signos est\u00e1n presentes en sus quince adaptaciones de obras literarias. teniendo en cuenta la afinidad de jhabvala con las obras de forster y james, as\u00ed como su compenetraci\u00f3n art\u00edstica e intelectual con el productor ismail merchant y el director james ivory, cabe pensar que existe un universo jhabvaliano que -durante el proceso de adaptaci\u00f3n- interact\u00faa con el universo de la novela original.  en el primer cap\u00edtulo, de car\u00e1cter introductorio, se establece la hip\u00f3tesis de trabajo y se toma la iconolog\u00eda como m\u00e9todo para el an\u00e1lisis. A continuaci\u00f3n se presenta el itinerario biogr\u00e1fico y narrativo de r.P. Jhabvala (cap\u00edtulo 2) y se examinan las constantes tem\u00e1ticas de su ficci\u00f3n (cap\u00edtulo 3). El determinismo cultural que reflejan sus obras, se hace expl\u00edcito a trav\u00e9s de tres patrones de conflicto que hacen referencia a la identidad: crisis derivadas del contacto con otra cultura, asilamiento social provocado por un cambio social, crisis de la mujer por su propia condici\u00f3n. Por otro lado, la preocupaci\u00f3n de jhabvala por el arte y el artista conecta con la tradici\u00f3n est\u00e9tica arnoldiana.  en el cap\u00edtulo (cap\u00edtulo 4) se estudian pormenorizadamente las tres adaptaciones. Siguiendo el m\u00e9todo iconol\u00f3gico se analizan, en primer lugar, las operaciones ret\u00f3ricas que jhabvala efect\u00faa sobre el texto de la novela (omisiones, a\u00f1adidos, sumarios,
