Dichas representaciones ofrecen un primer nivel de abstracci\u00f3n y permiten reducir el n\u00famero de elementos a procesar con respecto a la representaci\u00f3n cl\u00e1sica basada en el pixel. Se revisan dos representaciones: el grafo de regiones adyacentes y el \u00e1rbol, y se discute por qu\u00e9 las representaciones basadas en \u00e1rboles son m\u00e1s adecuadas. Los \u00e1rboles representan la imagen de forma jer\u00e1rquica y permiten la aplicaci\u00f3n de t\u00e9cnicas eficientes y complejas. La discursi\u00f3n se centra en c\u00f3mo crear la representaci\u00f3n jer\u00e1rquica a partir de una imagen y c\u00f3mo manipular o procesar el \u00e1rbol.  el \u00e1rbol de m\u00e1ximos es un tipo de representaci\u00f3n que estructura de forma compacta las componentes conexas que surgen de todos los posibles conjuntos de niveles de una imagen de nivel de gris. Permite implementar operadores conexos antiextensivos, desde filtros de \u00e1rea hasta operadores como filtros de movimiento. En cambio, el \u00e1rbol binario de particiones estructura el conjunto de regiones que se obtiene mediante un algoritmo de fusi\u00f3n basado en regiones. Supera alguno de los inconvenientes impuestos por la representaci\u00f3n anterior y ha demostrado ser apta para un gran n\u00famero de aplicaciones.  las estrategias de procesado se basan en t\u00e9cnicas de poda, que eliminan algunas ramas del \u00e1rbol bas\u00e1ndose en un algoritmo de an\u00e1lisis aplicado a los nodos del \u00e1rbol. Aplicadas al \u00e1rbol de m\u00e1ximos permiten obtener operadores anti-extensivos, mientras que para el caso del \u00e1rbol binario de particiones se obtienen operadores auto-duales si \u00e9ste ha sido creado de forma auto-dual. las aplicaciones de filtrado (en el contexto de los operadores conexos) y segmentaci\u00f3n est\u00e1n basadas en el principio siguiente: se analizan los nodos del
