Cl\u00e1sicamente, por las diferencias en su comportamiento cl\u00ednico y respuesta al tratamiento, se consideran dos grandes grupos: carcinoma microc\u00edtico y no microc\u00edtico. Este \u00faltimo incluye a los carcinomas escamosos, adenocarcinomas y carcinomas de c\u00e9lulas grandes. Los dos primeros son los m\u00e1s frecuentes y aunque se agrupen, muestran rasgos epidemiol\u00f3gicos y de comportamiento diferentes. No se conocen con certeza las v\u00edas de carcinog\u00e9nesis del carcinoma no microc\u00edtico. En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os se han ido describiendo alteraciones moleculares en oncogenes y genes supresores en relaci\u00f3n con la patogenia de este tipo de tumores. El brazo corto del cromosoma 3 (3p) es una de las zonas del genoma en que se describen frecuentes alteraciones (deleciones, p\u00e9rdidas de heterocigosidad) en el c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n. Esto sugiere la existencia de candidatos a genes supresores de tumores en dicha regi\u00f3n. Uno de \u00e9stos, el gen fhit, localizado en 3p14.2, est\u00e1 alterado en muchos tumores s\u00f3lidos incluyendo el carcinoma de pulm\u00f3n. Incluye a una de las regiones fr\u00e1giles del genoma (fra3b) y se localiza junto al punto de rotura de la traslocaci\u00f3n t(3,8) de los carcinomas renales familiares. codifica una prote\u00edna de la familia de las hit (tr\u00edada de la histidina) que parece tener un papel importante en el control de la proliferaci\u00f3n celulares. Hemos estudiado, en una serie de 54 c., Escamosos y 44 adenocarcinomas, la frecuencia de las p\u00e9rdidas de expresi\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna fhit y de loh en 3p14.2 y la correlaci\u00f3n entre ambas alteraciones; la relaci\u00f3n de estas alteraciones con el tipo tumoral, datos cl\u00ednicos, la expresi\u00f3n (mediante inmunohistoqu\u00edmica) de algunas de las prote\u00ednas que se describen alteradas en el carcinoma no microc\u00edtico (p53, c-myc, bcl-2, c-mos, ciclina d1) y la relaci\u00f3n con el indice de proliferaci\u00f3n de estos tumores (ki67 y
