Una de estas alteraciones es la p\u00e9rdida de material gen\u00e9tico en el brazo corto del cromosoma 9 (9p21). Se ha demostrado que esta regi\u00f3n contiene un gen supresor de tumores llamado p16 que codifica la prote\u00edna p16.  en este trabajo se ha estudiado una serie de 48 pacientes diagnosticados de carcinoma renal en los que se analiz\u00f3 la loh en 9p21, el estado de metilaci\u00f3n del promotor del gen p16 y la expresi\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna p16.  las alteraciones gen\u00e9ticas del gen supresor p16 son un hecho frecuente en nuestra serie de pacientes: el 50% no expresa la prote\u00edna p16. El 51% presenta al menos una de las alteraciones gen\u00e9ticas estudiadas. La loh en 9p21 (25%) y la metilaci\u00f3n del promotor del gen p16 (23%) son hechos frecuentes.  la loh y la metilaci\u00f3n tienen tendencias a relacionarse con los estadios precoces y grados diferenciados y, la ausencia de expresi\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna p16 tiende a ser un evento tard\u00edo. Los pacientes que presentan al menos una de las alteraciones tienen un riesgo relativo de recidivar 1,45 veces superior a los que no tienen ninguna alteraci\u00f3n y los pacientes que no expresan p16 tienen un riesgo de recidivar de 2,04 veces m\u00e1s que los que expresan prote\u00edna, aunque estas diferencias no son estad\u00edsticamente significativas. la metilaci\u00f3n puede ser un factor pron\u00f3stico en los pacientes mayores de 60 a\u00f1os. \u00faNicamente el grado de diferenciaci\u00f3n present\u00f3 significado pron\u00f3stico indpendiente en la sle.
