El mayor inter\u00e9s se centra en la obtenci\u00f3n de la coloraci\u00f3n denominada rub\u00ed. Este color tan apreciado en piezas de vidrio art\u00edstico de calidad, le proporciona al vidrio un importante valor a\u00f1adido. Su obtenci\u00f3n por los procedimientos convencionales de fusi\u00f3n e incorporaci\u00f3n en masa resulta dif\u00edcilmente reproducible, ya que requiere controles muy rigurosos de atm\u00f3sfera y de temperatura. Sin embargo, la coloraci\u00f3n por un proceso de intercambio i\u00f3nico, as\u00ed como por deposici\u00f3n de recubrimientos v\u00eda sol-gel, permite conseguir resultados m\u00e1s controlables.
