Maquiavelo se nos presenta a caballo entre la libertad y el finalismo propio del naturalismo aristotelico. Ambas nociones constituirian su forma mentis y estarian muy presentes en los conceptos fundamentales de su pensamiento. Asi, por ejemplo, no podriamos entender la \u00abvirtu\u00bb sin presuponer un distanciamiento de determinaciones ideologicas, temperamentales, etc., Que haga posible una adecuada adaptacion a las exigencias de la \u00abfortuna\u00bb, concepto que resultaria incomprensible en nuestro filosofo si no es entendido a modo de una fuerza cosmica ciega cuya logica interna se aproxima al determinismo de la \u00abnecessita\u00bb.  sin embargo, donde se dan puntual cita tanto la libertad como el finalismo naturalista aristotelico es en la nocion implicita en su filosofia politica conocida desde guicciardini, como \u00abrazon de estado\u00bb. En el estado comparecen una voluntad ordenadora (centrada en el bien comun) y una serie de fuerzas irracionales entre las que destaca la ambicion.
