El \u00e1cido fenilac\u00e9tico es degradado por p.Putida u a trav\u00e9s de una nueva ruta catab\u00f3lica en la que el primer evento de la secuencia de degradaci\u00f3n va a ser la esterificaci\u00f3n del \u00e1cido fenilac\u00e9tico con coa para dar lugar a fenilacetil-coa. Se han caracterizado los genes que codifican las funciones necesarias para la degradaci\u00f3n del \u00e1cido fenilac\u00e9tico. Estos genes (15) est\u00e1n incluidos en un segmento de dna de 18 kb y est\u00e1n organizados en tres operones catab\u00f3licos consecutivos. Adicionalmente, asociados con los operones catab\u00f3licos aparecen dos genes reguladores. Los genes catab\u00f3licos codifican las siguientes unidades funcionales:  1,- un sistema responsable de la incorporaci\u00f3n celular de \u00e1cido fenilac\u00e9tico (paal y paam).  2,- una enzima que activa este compuesto a su coa derivado (paaf).  3,- un sistema responsable de la hidroxilaci\u00f3n del anillo arom\u00e1tico del fenilacetil-coa (paaghijk).  4,- una prote\u00edna responsable de la apertura del anillo (paan).  5,- un sistema de beta-oxidaci\u00f3n (paaabce). Los genes reguladores est\u00e1n constituidos por paax, que codifica una prote\u00edna que act\u00faa como represor de la ruta degradativa y que reconoce espec\u00edficamente al fenilacetil-coa como mol\u00e9cula desrepresora de la ruta, y paay, que codifica una prote\u00edna reguladora que a\u00fan no ha sido caracterizada completamente.  se define el concepto de catabol\u00f3n como una unidad
