Adem\u00e1s la mayor concienciaci\u00f3n medioambiental por parte de los ciudadanos ha hecho que la demanda de productos libres de covs haya aumentado. Por ejemplo, en pinturas destinadas a recubrimientos de fachadas, la cuota de mercado en europa de las pinturas al agua es superior al 70%. La polimerizaci\u00f3n en emulsi\u00f3n ha contribuido a la r\u00e1pida expansi\u00f3n de productos con bajos niveles de covs. Sin embargo en este tipo de pinturas existen inevitablemente covs (mon\u00f3mero residual y compuestos provenientes de reacciones secundarias) que deben ser eliminados. Actualmente la eliminaci\u00f3n se realiza por pruebas de ensayo-error con los problemas que esto conlleva.  en esta tesis se han investigado en detalle los mecanismos involucrados en el proceso de postpolimerizaci\u00f3n de l\u00e1tex vin\u00edlicos y estireno-acr\u00edlicos de caracter\u00edsticas industriales. Ello ha permitido establecer un criterio de eficacia para la selecci\u00f3n de los sistemas iniciadores redox solubles en agua, siendo aquellos sistemas que generan radicales hidr\u00f3fobos los m\u00e1s eficaces en la eliminaci\u00f3n de mon\u00f3mero residual. Se ha desarrollado un modelo matem\u00e1tico capaz de predecir la eliminaci\u00f3n del mon\u00f3mero residual y formaci\u00f3n de nuevos covs. Este modelo ha sido empleado para optimizar la etapa de postpolimerizaci\u00f3n obteniendo concentraciones finales de mon\u00f3mero residual (&lt;50 ppm) y covs (&lt;1250 ppm) en l\u00e1tex vin\u00edlcos en las mejores condiciones de
