Se ha descrito en todas las c\u00e9lulas eucariotas estudiadas, no obstante, se desconoce tanto su funci\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica como su mecanismo de regulaci\u00f3n. En humanos presenta una estructura heterotetramerica formada por dos tipos de subunidades: las subunidades catal\u00edticas ck2 alfa y las reguladoras ck2 beta, aunque en ma\u00edz hasta el momento de empezar esta tesis no se hab\u00eda descrito existencia de subunidades ck2 beta. En plantas ck2 tiene un efecto pleiotropico dentro de la c\u00e9lula ya que se encuentra implicada en multitud de procesos esenciales para la viabilidad  del organismo. Entre los sustratos de ck2 descritos en ma\u00edz se encuentra la prote\u00edna rab17. rab17 es una parote\u00edna de tipo lea (late embryogenesis abundant) que se acumula en embri\u00f3n maduro y en respueta a aestr\u00e9s abi\u00f3tico y a aba. Aunque no se ha demostrado su funci\u00f3n experimentos previos indicaban una posible funci\u00f3n de rab17 en situaci\u00f3n de estr\u00e9s osm\u00f3tico regulada por fosforilaci\u00f3n por ck2.  resultados  la tesis se divide en tres cap\u00edtulos.  el primero consta de dos publicaciones internacionales: maize protein kinase ck2: regulation and functionality of three beta subunits. En estas publicaciones se describe la caracterizaci\u00f3n molecular de la prote\u00edna quinasa ck2 incluyendo el aislamiento de tres subunidades reguladoras ck2 beta de ma\u00edz y una nueva subunidad catal\u00edtica. tambi\u00e9n se incluye una caracterizaci\u00f3n del holoenzima ck2 de ma\u00edz a nivel bioqu\u00edmico.
