Twist se expresa uniformemente en la regi\u00f3n ventral del embri\u00f3n en estadio de blastodermo celular. En este momento, twist le requiere para inducir el mesodermo durante la gestrulaci\u00f3n. Posteriormente, la expresi\u00f3n de twist se modula de manera que, en cada segmento mesod\u00e9rmico, la regi\u00f3n posterior expresa altas concentraciones de la prote\u00edna, mientras que la regi\u00f3n embri\u00f3n expresa bajas concentraciones.  experimentos de ganancia y p\u00e9rdida de funci\u00f3n del gen twist indican que se necesitan altas concentraciones de la prote\u00edna para la diferenciaci\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas mesod\u00e9rmicas como m\u00fasculos som\u00e1ticos.  para investigar las bases moleculares de este requerimiento hemos llevado a cabo experimentos in vitro e in vivo. Estos experimentos indican que twist forma homod\u00edmeros capaces de inducir el mesodermo y activar el proceso miog\u00e9nico, mientras que heterod\u00edmeros entre twist y otra prote\u00edna del tipo bhlh, daughterless (da) reprmien dicho proceso en el mesodermo. sorprendentemente, estos heterod\u00edmeros son capaces de activar la transcripci\u00f3n de genes espec\u00edficos de m\u00fasculos cuando se expresan ect\u00f3picamente en el ectodermo.
