La mayoria las lineas y clones derivados de leishmania major lv-561 mostraron cariotipos similares a las lineas parentales. Sin embargo, algunos clones mostraron bandas de dna adicionales que resultaron ser minicromosomas.  estos minicromosomas resultaron ser una amplificacion espontanea de dna de una region del cromosoma de 1,9 mb relacionados con la familia ld1 de amplificaciones en leishmania, la dinamica de esta amplificacion de dna se ha estudiado mediante analisis de la estabilidad de estos minicromosomas in vivo e in vitro. Tambien se pudo determinar la aparicion de novo de estos elementos. La estructura de los minicromosomas se ha examinado mediante la construccion de mapas de restriccion e hibridacion que muestran la repeticion invertida que abarca la totalidad del minicromosoma. Como en el caso de l. Major, los minicromosomas ld1 de l. Mexicana y l. Donovani son tambien una repeticion invertida. La localizacion de esta region en el cromosoma fuente de l.
