Sin embargo, se desconocen los mecanismos moleculares implicados. La p\u00e9rdida de c\u00e9lulas mesoteliales, aguda durante al peritonitis y cr\u00f3nica en el transcurso de la dp, disminuye la capacidad de defensa peritoneal y favorece las adherencias y la fibrosis peritoneal. pero, se conoce poco sobre la patogenia de las c\u00e9lulas mesoteliales.  la muerte celular por apoptosis es el principal mecanismo de disminuci\u00f3n progresiva del n\u00famero de c\u00e9lulas en otros sistemas biol\u00f3gicos, por lo que hemos abordado su participaci\u00f3n en la regulaci\u00f3n de la celularidad peritoneal.  hemos estudiado la presencia de apoptosis y la expresi\u00f3n de la citoquinas letales, por parte de las c\u00e9lulas peritoneales, durante la peritonitis. tambi\u00e9n, hemos evaluado la participaci\u00f3n de la muerte celular por apoptosis y de las caspasas en la citotoxicidad de las soluciones de dp y en la defensa peritoneal. Adem\u00e1s, hemos establecido un modelo experimental de peritonitis murina por s.Aureus, en el cual poder evaluar el significado in vivo de los resultados obtenidos in vitro.  durante el proceso de peritonitis existe muerte celular por apoptosis de leucocitos y de c\u00e9lulas mesoteliales in vivo. En estas circunstancias, se expresan localmente ciertas citoquinas letales como ligando de fas, que es capaz de inducir muerte celular por apoptosis en c\u00e9lulas mesoteliales.  las soluciones glucosadas comerciales de dp tamponadas con lactato y ph 5.5, inducen apoptosis a trav\u00e9s de la activaci\u00f3n de las caspasas en c\u00e9lulas inflamatorias peritoneales y en c\u00e9lulas mesoteliales.
