Tanto el xenobi\u00f3tico como los productos de su biotransformaci\u00f3n son muy reactivos, originando especies reactivas de ox\u00edgeno que provocan da\u00f1os a biomol\u00e9culas (adn, prote\u00ednas, l\u00edpidos, etc). Ante esta situaci\u00f3n los organismos presentan sistemas de defensa antioxidante (enzim\u00e1ticos y no enzim\u00e1ticos).  los moluscos bivalvos, por su capacidad de bioacumulaci\u00f3n y transformaci\u00f3n de contaminantes, se usan como indicadores del nivel de poluci\u00f3n de las aguas que habitan. El litoral onubense es un \u00e1rea rica en la producci\u00f3n de moluscos, aunque existen zonas con altos niveles de cobre y otros metales de transici\u00f3n.  en el presente trabajo se han utilizado el osti\u00f3n (crassostrea angulata) y el mejill\u00f3n (mytilus galloprovincialis) como indicadores de contaminaci\u00f3n. se han tomado muestras de dos zonas contaminadas (punta umbr\u00eda y mazag\u00f3n) y de una zona m\u00e1s amplia (isla cristina). Se han determinado los niveles de cobre y zinc y distintos par\u00e1metros como biomarcadores de contaminaci\u00f3n (actividades enzim\u00e1ticas antioxidantes -catalasa, super\u00f3xido dismutasa, glutati\u00f3n peroxidasa y glutati\u00f3n transferasa-, estado redox del glutation, metalotione\u00ednas, taurina, malondialdeh\u00eddo y 8- oxo-desoxiguanosina).  los resultados muestran claras diferencias entre ambas especies.  los ostiones acumulan mayor concentraci\u00f3n de metales en sus tejidos, a la vez que presentan inducidos la mayor\u00eda de sistemas de defensa antioxidante, por lo que el da\u00f1o oxidativo en biomol\u00e9culas es menor. Por el contrario, los mejillones acumulan menor cantidad de metales, presentan escasa inducci\u00f3n en sus mecanismos de defensa y mayores niveles de metabolitos resultante del da\u00f1o oxidativo.
