Se han obtenido diferentes cepas de levadura que sobre-expresan dicho gen, o bien que carecen de \u00e9l. el estudio de dichas cepas ha demostrado que este gen est\u00e1 implicado en la degradaci\u00f3n del metilglioxal, un intermediario metab\u00f3lico altamente t\u00f3xico cuya producci\u00f3n aumenta en condiciones de p\u00e9rdida de control la glic\u00f3lisis, tales como el estr\u00e9s. Al ser a\u00f1adido extracelularmente, el metilglioxal dispara la transcripci\u00f3n de los genes encargados de la detoxificaci\u00f3n, glo1 y gre3. Adem\u00e1s, los genes implicados en la s\u00edntesis de glicerol y trehalosa, tambi\u00e9n se activan ante la presencia del compuesto. La activaci\u00f3n de gpd1 por metilglioxal es mayor en cepas que carecen de los genes glo1 y gre3, por lo que los cambios en la concentraci\u00f3n intracelular del t\u00f3xico parecen modular la intensidad de la respuesta a \u00e9ste. De este modo, el metilglioxal podr\u00eda estar funcionando como una se\u00f1al interna, para el disparo de genes con funci\u00f3n protectora ante los efectos nocivos provocados por una p\u00e9rdida del control sobre la glic\u00f3lisis. La respuesta al metilglioxal parece estar medida por la ruta hog, dado que la eliminaci\u00f3n de algunos componentes de esta ruta provoca una respuesta deficiente al t\u00f3xico. Adem\u00e1s, la exposic\u00f3n a metilglioxal provoca la translocaci\u00f3n del factor transcripcional hog1p al n\u00facleo, lo cual es una se\u00f1al indirecta de que la ruta hog se activa
