Por lo tanto, el estudio de la g\u00e9nesis de dichos cambios estructurales, y de las consecuencias funcionales de los mismos, es de vital importancia para el conocimiento de la enfermedad, su prevenci\u00f3n y su cura. En el caso del ri\u00f1\u00f3n, grados variables de esclerosis glomerular y\/o  fibrosis intersticial est\u00e1n presentes en diferentes formas de enfermedad renal progresiva y en el envejecimiento. estas alteraciones estructurales son debidas fundamentalmente a la acumulaci\u00f3n de prote\u00ednas de matriz extracelular en diferentes niveles de la corteza renal, como consecuencia de la s\u00edntesis incrementada y\/o degradaci\u00f3n disminuida de estas prote\u00ednas.  los avances en el conocimiento de la biolog\u00eda celular y de la funci\u00f3n de determinadas citoquinas nos han permitido profundizar en los mecanismos implicados en la progresi\u00f3n de estas situaciones an\u00f3malas. La capacidad de la c\u00e9lula mesangial de modular su fenotipo proliferativo y secretor de matriz extracelular, evidencia su papel crucial en el desarrollo y progresi\u00f3n de la esclerosis glomerular. Una citoquina que, por su capacidad matrig\u00e9nica ha demostrado ejercer un papel central en el desarrollo de enfermedades con componente fibr\u00f3tico, el factor de crecimiento transformante b
