El sistema nervioso, primordialmente afectado en la fenilcetonuria, es extremadamente sensible al estr\u00e9s oxidativo debido a su alto consumo de ox\u00edgeno, el alto contenido en hierro y l\u00edpidos (especialmente \u00e1cidos poliinsaturados) i la baja capacidad del sistema antioxidante, tal como se ha demostrado en otras enfermedades (epilepsia, esclerosis m\u00faltiple, demencia &#8230;). Por tanto, un exceso de producci\u00f3n de radicales libres o un defecto en la s\u00edntesis de sustancias antioxidantes podr\u00eda relacionarse con las alteraciones neurol\u00f3gicas observadas en la fenilcetonuria.  el objetivo principal de esta tesis doctoral es estudiar el sistema antioxidante y su relaci\u00f3n con el control metab\u00f3lico-nutricional y con el estr\u00e9s oxidativo en los pacientes fenilceton\u00faricos.  se estudiaron 65 pacientes fenilceton\u00faricos (media 15,3 a\u00f1os (rango 3-37); 39 pacientes con hiperfenilalaninemia moderada  (media 8,7 a\u00f1os (rango 3-17) y 66 controles (media 16 a\u00f1os (rango 1-38).  se determinaron loa mino\u00e1cidos, homociste\u00edna, glutati\u00f3n, retinol, tocoferol, \u00e1cido asc\u00f3rbico, malondialdehido en plasma; colesterol total, hdl, ldl, triglic\u00e9ridos, ubiquinona, folato, cobalamina y selenio; las actividades de la glutati\u00f3n peroxidas, glutati\u00f3n reductasa, super\u00f3xido dismutasa y catalasa en eritrocitos; y la ingesta diaria de colesterol y l\u00edpidos totales por medio de una encuesta diet\u00e9tica.  los resultados de nuestro estudio confirman que un elevado porcentaje de pacientes fnilceton\u00faricos muestran una deficiencia plasm\u00e1tica de ubiquinona. esta deficiencia est\u00e1 principalmente relacionada con dos factores: en primer lugar, con las elevadas concentraciones
