En orden a lo que interes\u00f3 extraer de su obra y someter a un mejor juicio -el horizonte de sentido en la historia- la tesis se concentra de modo principal en el an\u00e1lisis de sus tres trabajos m\u00e1s relevantes y conocidos: progress and religion, religion and culture y the dynamics of worold history.  se busca poner de relieve aquellas investigaciones y reflexiones suyas que constituyen un aporte a una visi\u00f3n abierta de la historia, capaz de superar los reduccionismos a que tanto formas antiguas como modernas de gnosis la someten.  a causa de dicho cometido se considera a la luz de varios autores el concepto de metahistoria. De ello se trata en el cap\u00edtulo tercero.  en el segundo cap\u00edtulo se confronta el pensamiento de dawson con dos figuras de la filosof\u00eda de la historia de su tiempo: oswald spengler y arnold toynbee. dicho cotejo tiene el prop\u00f3sito de situar el planteamiento de dawson a distancia de las escatolog\u00edas inmanentes y de las filosof\u00edas de la historia impregnadas por el idealismo hegeliano.  el cap\u00edtulo cuarto busca dejar establecidas las bases \u00abmacroc\u00f3smicas\u00bb y \u00abmicroc\u00f3smicas\u00bb en que se fundamenta espec\u00edficamente dawson, precisando cu\u00e1les son sus principales fuentes. En el primer \u00e1mbito nos encontraremos de lleno con san agust\u00edn. En el segundo \u00e1mbito, orientado hacia las realidades sociol\u00f3gicas de la cultura y de la historia, vendr\u00e1n a colaci\u00f3n nombres como ley play, fustel decoulanges, troeltsch y eliot.  la concepci\u00f3n de la cultura resulta as\u00ed en dawson de una equilibrada ecuaci\u00f3n de elementos materiales -\u00abbiologismo moderado\u00bb, que comprende desde el contexto geogr\u00e1fico hasta la conformaci\u00f3n de las razas- y espirituales, f\u00f3rmula que supera los desequilibrios producidos por diversos determinismos. en dicha ecuaci\u00f3n prevalece siempre el factor
