Las primeras no s\u00f3lo son importantes debido a la influencia de sus resultados en la interpretaci\u00f3n posterior, sino que, debido a la cantidad ingente de datos que procesan, son clave para obtener una alta velocidad de respuesta del sistema en conjunto. Aunque a veces situada a medio camino entre una etapa de bajo y alto nivel, la segmentaci\u00f3n de im\u00e1genes es una tarea con un elevado coste computacional asociado. Entre los distintos m\u00e9todos de segmentaci\u00f3n, los llamados contornos activos se han aplicado con \u00e9xito en la detecci\u00f3n y seguimiento de objetos en an\u00e1lisis de im\u00e1genes correspondientes a diferentes dominios (im\u00e1genes biom\u00e9dicas, v\u00eddeo segmentaci\u00f3n, etc.). La implementaci\u00f3n de esta t\u00e9cnica de segmentaci\u00f3n basada en modelos en un circuito integrado ofrece una soluci\u00f3n a las aplicaciones que requieran una alta velocidad de respuesta, especialmente cuando en el circuito se incluyen las etapas de adquisi\u00f3n y preprocesamiento. Dicho circuito integrado formar\u00eda parte de un sistema de visi\u00f3n para tareas tales como v\u00eddeo vigilancia, navegaci\u00f3n de robots, etc.  los contornos activos son un caso particular de los llamados modelos deformables multidimensionales, en los cuales una curva el\u00e1stica en una imagen evoluciona hacia algunas de sus caracter\u00edsticas despu\u00e9s de minimizar una funci\u00f3n de energ\u00eda que involucra fuerzas externas e internas. Los p\u00edxel-level snakes (pls) dise\u00f1ados en nuestro grupo de investigaci\u00f3n, implementan una t\u00e9cnica basada en contornos activos que soluciona problemas t\u00edpicos asociados a los contornos activos como pueden ser su computacionalmente costosa formulaci\u00f3n matem\u00e1tica y su dificultad para realizar transformaciones topol\u00f3gicas.  es m\u00e1s,
