En la primera parte se estudia el uno como realidad suprema, anterior al ser y al pensar, fuente de cuanto es y sin esencia. En la segunda parte se estudia la contemplacion como vision de la realidad suprema, rastreando los origenes del concepto plotiniano de la participacion y de la contemplacion en el parmenides de platon. El estudio penetra especialmente en la contemplacion ascendente, que conduce desde lo sensible hasta el uno, presente en la interioridad del alma y de la inteligencia. En la tercera parte se analiza el concepto de belleza como expresion del uno. Siguiendo el el banquete de platon se presentan los textos en que plotino habla de la conversion del alma hasta el uno, ascendiendo de la belleza sensible a la inteligible y de esta a la realidad primera.  esta dialectica de la belleza tiene tres estadios, que son los tres hombres plotinianos: el musico, el amante y el filosofo, que son simbolizados por el viaje de ulises que regresa a itaca, sorteando los cantos de las sirenas, el atractivo de circe y de calipso y llega a la fiel penelope.
