Ssao es una prote\u00edna de membrana bifuncional que, a parte de la actividad aminoxidasa, presenta propiedades de adhesi\u00f3n vascular. La prote\u00edna de adhesi\u00f3n vascular-1 (vap-1), perteneciente a la familia de prote\u00ednas de adhesi\u00f3n implicadas en procesos inflamatorios y en la interacci\u00f3n c\u00e9lula-c\u00e9lula, es id\u00e9ntica a la prote\u00edna ssao de placenta humana.  ssao est\u00e1 altamente expresada en tejido adiposo. La funci\u00f3n de ssao en los adipocitos no ha sido establecida; sin embargo, el per\u00f3sido de hidr\u00f3geno, uno de los productos de la reacci\u00f3n que cataliza, presenta propiedades isulinomim\u00e9ticas en estas c\u00e9lulas. En este sentido, se ha descrito que sustratos de ssao en adipocitos estimulan el transporte de glucosa y el reclutamiento del transportador de glucosa glut4 a la membrana plasm\u00e1tica de la c\u00e9lula en presencia de bajas concentraciones de vanadato. El mecanismos de acci\u00f3n requiere la generaci\u00f3n de peroxovanadato, la inhibic\u00f3n de prote\u00ednas tirosina fosfatasa, la fosorilaci\u00f3n en tirosinas de los sustratos del receptor de la insulina irs-1 y irs-3 y la activaci\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna fosfatidilinositol-3-quinasa.  de acuerdo con los efectos insulinomim\u00e9ticos in vitro, hemos demostrado in vivo propiedades insulinomim\u00e9ticas de la benzilamina, un sustrato de ssao, en combinaci\u00f3n con bajas e inefectivas dosis de vanadato.
