Aplicando una metodolog\u00eda estructuralista identifica los determinantes anal\u00edticos que aplicar\u00e1 en su estudio. En seis cap\u00edtulos analiza los ejemplares conocidos bajo estas diferentes perspectivas: espacio, forma, uso y tama\u00f1o; ornamentaci\u00f3n; temas decorativos, partiendo del trasunto del para\u00edso analiza las representaciones animales, humanas, vegetales y de elementos inanimados, continuando con las caligraf\u00edas, estilo, contenido y significado, para concluir con un an\u00e1lisis temporal, originario, evolutivo y actual.  en la segunda parte realiza un cat\u00e1logo de los m\u00e1s de 750 objetos inventariados, con importantes novedades a trav\u00e9s de las agrupaciones que el autor identifica: islam inicial, los tres n\u00facleos en que agrupa el periodo califal andalus\u00ed, los periodos taifas, la producci\u00f3n surit\u00e1lica en amalfi-salermo, la amplia industria en sicili que clasifica en 20 grupos (desde el s. Xi al xiv), la trasici\u00f3n al g\u00f3tico, los marfiles hispanomusulmanes en los periodos agricanos y en el reino de granada, las diferentes etapas de los marfiles en egipto (prefatim\u00edes, fatim\u00edes, ayyub\u00edes, mamelucos y otomanos), marfiles orientales isl\u00e1micos (persas, tim\u00faridas, india y ceil\u00e1n). Concluye con el an\u00e1lisis de las taraceas (orientales, hispanas e italianas). Aporta un an\u00e1lisis estad\u00edstico, cuadros clasificatorios y una importante selecci\u00f3n bibliogr\u00e1fica.
