La unidad se localiza en el sector occidental de la provincia de m\u00e1laga y forma parte de un paraje de gran importancia ambiental, catalogado como reserva de la biosfera por la unesco.  la estructura interna m\u00e1s importante de la unidad es un gran pliegue sinclinal tumbado, de direcci\u00f3n axial n40-60e y vergente al nw, cuyo flanco inverso aparece sistem\u00e1ticamente metamorfizado por el cabalgamiento de las peridotitas alpuj\u00e1rrides de la unidad de los reales.  la precipitaci\u00f3n media anual sobre la unidad, de 909 mm\/a\u00f1o, est\u00e1 condicionada, principalmente, por la altitud y por el \u00abefecto barrera\u00bb que ejercen los relieves existentes.  la recarga de la unidad hidrogeol\u00f3gica se realiza por infiltraci\u00f3n del agua de lluvia y de fusi\u00f3n nival, mientras que la descarga tiene lugar, principalmente, a trav\u00e9s de manantiales situados en el borde se.  durante el per\u00edodo 1995\/96-1998\/99, el valor medio de la recarga es de 89 hm3\/a\u00f1o, que equivale a un 51% de la precipitaci\u00f3n. Las salidas conjuntas de la unidad durante este per\u00edodo ascienden a 88 hm3\/a\u00f1o, por lo que son pr\u00e1cticamente similares a las entradas.  el estudio de las caracter\u00edsticas geol\u00f3gicas e hidrogeol\u00f3gicas (hidrodin\u00e1mica, hidroqu\u00edmica, hidrotermia e isotopos), generales de la unidad, de las cotas de surgencia de los manantiales y de las cotas piezom\u00e9tricas en los sondeos, permite diferenciar tres sistemas acu\u00edferos: sierra de las nieves, yunquera y prieta-bonela-alcapara\u00edn.  el sistema de la sierra de las nieves, con una superficie de 109 km2, corresponden al sector occidental de la unidad, en el cual existe un mayor desarrollo del modelado k\u00e1rstico.
