En nuestro laboratorio se observ\u00f3 que plantas de tomate de la variedad \u00abrutgers\u00bb tratadas con jasmonato de metilo (hormona implicada en la respuesta a herida) acumulaban en sus hojas altos niveles de una prote\u00edna de 21 kda, a la que denominamos jip-21. Con el prop\u00f3sito de analizar el posible papel defensivo de esta prote\u00edna hemos llevado a cabo su caracterizaci\u00f3n molecular y bioqu\u00edmica. Para ello, hemos purificado dicha prote\u00edna y hemos obtenido sus correspondientes anticuerpos. A continuaci\u00f3n, mediante inmuno-rastreo, hemos aislado el clon de cdna, cuyo an\u00e1lisis de homolog\u00eda de secuencia indica una posible  funci\u00f3n de inhibidor de catepsina d. El estudio de la expresi\u00f3n de jip-21 mediante northern-blot muestra que el gen se induce exclusivamente en hojas heridas o tratadas con meja (jasmonato de metilo), tanto local como distalmente. Mediante rt-pcr hemos detectado niveles constitutivos de mensajero en las flores, el tallo y los frutos de plantas adultas, as\u00ed como en las ra\u00edces de pl\u00e1ntulas sumergidas en una soluci\u00f3n de meja. Se ha obtenido la secuencia gen\u00f3mica completa y se ha visto que el gen no presenta intrones. La regulaci\u00f3n de la secuencia promotora parece presentar una serie de singularidades que lo hacen incompatible con sistemas heter\u00f3logos, puesto que plantas transg\u00e9nicas de arabidopsis thaliana y de tabaco, a las que se ha introducido el gen jip-21 completo, no producen el patr\u00f3n de expresi\u00f3n observado en la especie nativa. Asimismo, se han obtenido plantas transg\u00e9nicas de tomate portadoras del cdna bajo el control transcripcional del promotor dobel 35s2x del camv.
